Kerala Flood - Kerosene Stoves

Latest Update: We delivered all 930 stoves to North Wayanad on Saturday around 6:30 PM IST. The ranger from the Muthanga Forest region (with whom we are coordinating distributions to the tribal population) confirmed that the stoves were delivered and unloaded as per plan. We have attached pictures of the truck loaded with stoves and also a copy of the invoice. The outstanding payment was made to the vendor today (8/27/2018). We used up all of the $5,018 in net funds received from GoFundMe.

We would like to thank everyone who contributed to this project for their generosity and their immediate responses. We were able to raise a large amount of money in a small amount of time in order to cater to a segment of the population that is both marginalized and typically under served by relief efforts. We would also like to thank everyone who worked behind the scenes to get this project completed - Johny, Radhika, Kasturi and Aabha (from Ek Pot Lee Ret ki) and Minu. We hope to get some pictures of the stoves being distributed/used. We will upload them as and when we get them.

The Chennai Relief Team for the Kerala Floods, Anbudan Tamizhagam, has been asked to deliver kerosene stoves to all the districts affected by the floods. The need is urgent. A lot of people have contributed towards the Chief Ministers Relief Fund but these funds will only be deployed at a later stage. There are a lot of immediate needs, too, however, and these will have to be funded separately.

Each stove costs Rs. 300. We plan to purchase the stoves in bulk from vendors in Tamil Nadu. We have currently identified a vendor with 1,200 stoves - we will likely use this vendor for our first purchase.

GoFundMe charges approximately 3% on all funds raised. The funds net of GoFundMe's fees will be sent directly to a US checking account. All donors can receive a bank statement of the US checking account on request. Once the purchase is finalized we will fund the vendor directly from the US checking account. The Chennai Relief team will assist in facilitating direct payment to the vendors as well take care of packing and transportation for distribution through the Government of Kerala. The individual who will help facilitate this for Anbudan Tamizhagam is Johny Tom Varghese IAS.
