Kenya Sickle Cell Project

Donation protected
Hi friends and family!

This summer a team of bioengineering students and I will have the opportunity to travel to Kenya for two and a half weeks to implement projects we have been working on over the past year. Working with Arizona State University and Sustainable Resources of Kenya, my team and I have developed simple tests to identify sickle cell anemia in newborn babies as well as diabetes in patients of all ages. Additionally, we have formulated a business model for how to keep these tests running in remote locations in Africa in the future.

This summer we plan to travel to three partnering clinics in Kenya in order to get the plan off the ground- training the workers at the clinics on how to administer these tests and setting up the clinics for success in continuing to provide these tests to patients for the year to come.

This project and the experience I pose to gain from it mean a lot to me and have numerous implications for my future. It is important to me to help those in need, and this is a direct way I will be able to do so. Additionally, this trip will open my eyes to things to which I have not yet been exposed: needs of others that I didn't previously know existed, other cultures and ways of being, and ways I can make a difference. I feel like this experience is the first big step of a long journey toward having a fulfilling life in which I contribute to the world around me in a significant manner. This trip will help me further identify the way that I am able to use my talents to achieve this goal.

I am asking for your help in making the dream of this worthwhile project a reality. If able, please support me in any way you can through prayer, words of encouragement, or donations. Every little bit is helpful!

Furthermore, the impact of this project will be much more widespread than those I work with directly during my time in Africa. By teaching others how to continue these tests, the effect of this 18 day journey will be a full year of testing. Once the clinics are set up, they each plan to conduct approximately 7,000 tests in the coming year. That will be almost 21,000 individuals tested between the three clinics, all because of this short trip!

Sustainable Resources covers the cost of the materials used in the development and implementation of the tests. I am seeking to raise $4,000 to cover my travel expenses for the 2.5 week trip, so I can get there to help implement the project. After we leave, the running of the test from the clinic will be self-sustaining and will be able to continue through the small fees collected to administer it.

Stay tuned for updates throughout my fundraising journey and then actual trip in July!
