Kenya Permaculture Project

My name is Dave Harris, I live in Victoria, Australia (the Lucky Country). Last year I completed my PDC (Permaculture Design Certificate) as I wanted to learn more about looking after the Earth and becoming more self sufficient. One day I am hoping to grow enough fruit and vegetables to give to friends and family so we can reduce the need to go to supermarkets to buy plastic wrapped old produce. That doesn't really have much to do with this funding project though!
Recently I was looking at a Permaculture FB group when a new message popped up from a Prince Sebe Maloba from Kenya which asked for help. This FB group is a very small group in Tasmania with just over 400 members so my first reaction was "how did this Prince come to spam this page". I didn't take too much notice of it but I did see that it had been there for a day and had not had a single response - not a Like or Dislike or a "Go Away" comment. I then looked a little closer at it...

I could tell pretty quickly that this definitely was not spam. This was a real person (who happens to be a Prince!) trying to do good for local communities in Kenya.
I then sent him a message saying "tell me more..."
Since then we have talked a lot and even had a couple of video conferences. Sebe even messaged me last week while he was at a conference in Uganda on sexual health. He is a big supporter of local communities, human rights (especially women's rights), self sufficiency, permaculture practices and the environment.
I asked Sebe about his project, how much money he wants to raise and also about the logistics of getting money to him. He spent a day writing up a proposal - a 10 page document that talks about the current poor farming techniques being used that are not sustainable, the poor solis, the lack of water, the lack of food, the lack of jobs and general poverty in the region.
He then mapped out his plan.

Here are some of the objectives
1. To establish home gardens with abuntant indigenous food and herb crops
2. Planting of Nitrogen Fixing Trees using permaculture principles to improve soils.
3. Promotion of best practices for climate resilience through demonstration in three agro climatic zones
The specific objectives of the project are:
1. To characterize target farming landscapes and systems, and develop tools for matching species and management options to sites and circumstances.
2. To teach small-scale farmers how to make banana guild gardens and to recycle organic matter into organic fertilizers
3. Introduce water rain harvest initiatives in Matungu Sub-County
4. Learn to harvest human urine waste as organic fertilizer for crops and as insecticides
5. Teach and promote permaculture farming systems among small scale-farmers
6. To monitor the success of tree species and management on crop productivity, water resources and nutrients at field, farm and landscape scales to inform scaling up to improve food security and reduce climate risk.
Project Activities
1. Sensitize community in public meetings to advance and advocate for permaculture farming system in the region and support them.
2. We will create a detailed plan on how to achieve our development goals.
3. Establish water rain harvest community wells for garden and family use
4. To establish our community tree nursery for indigenous tree seedlings
5. Undertake regular project monitoring and evaluation as way of supervising effective project implementation.

Sebe Molabe helps local communities in Kenya become more self-sufficient by teaching Permaculture techniques to create productive food gardens. With ongoing drought in the region the wells are drying up and the people will need to cart water from far away. We are wanting to give the people the chance to become self sufficient by not only helping them through this dry period but also support valuable education programs on sustainable farming and Permaculture practice.
We have set a target of $10,000 and every dollar donated (minus the transfer fee and Gofundme fee) will go directly to the project, so the more money that is raised the more people we can help. We will share updates on the project to all donors via a Facebook Group (please search for "kenya food security permaculture project ")
so you can see the difference your donation is making and meet the people you are supporting.
