Kenya Project 2018

For those of you that know me, you know that it has been a life-long dream of mine to travel to Africa. When I was younger, I considered becoming a missionary but in my late teens, decided that the Peace Corps was the choice for me.

Then I met my husband John, fell madly in love, got married, became a teacher, had three children, and all that changed. What you may not know, is that on our wedding day, John promised that he would help my dream come true someday.

Well almost 20 years later, my dream is coming true!

On July 13th, 2018, ten volunteers including myself and two of my sons; Jack and Michael, will begin our humanitarian journey to Parkview Primary School in Nakuru, Kenya and I need your help!

Parkview Primary is a K-8 school located in Nakuru, Kenya. The school is made up of ten teachers, 415 students with eight permanent classrooms and two temporary classrooms with average class sizes of 40 students. Students walk an average of 45 minutes to and from school daily with little to no food.

Currently, there is no sustainable lunch program in place. The videos attached to this page show you the long lines and food distribution when my colleague Kyle went to Parkview several years ago. He was able to supply some lunch to the students at that time.

The students of Parkview barely have enough food to eat at home and often spend the entire day at school without eating. Children cannot concentrate in school and may skip school due to a lack of energy. Some of the children present with disorders associated with malnutrition and poor nutrition leads to poor performance in school.

While in Kenya the team will have the following goals:

- Develop and financially sponsor a daily lunch  program  for all students - approximate cost $6,000 per year

- Provide Reusable Sanitary Pads to all age appropriate  girls - $1,020

-Community Celebration  for all parents and children of Parkview Primary - $1,500

-Living Mural - Parkview students and volunteers will paint a mural to signify our commitment to the school

- Provide students and teachers with basic school supplies such as pencils, erasers, handheld pencil sharpeners

- Unforeseen Emergencies – This is my first time in Kenya and I want to be prepared in case things cost more than I had anticipated - $500

While in Kenya, the team will also be on a fact finding mission to determining other barriers to education the students face. It is our hope that this project continues for years to come!
