Fire Destroys Girls' Dorm in Kenyan Village
In the early morning hours of August 29th, in a remote part of rural Kenya, tragedy struck the Taru High School for Girls. A fire, which looks to have been started by arson, quickly ignited their dormitory, which not only housed 264 girls, but contained all of their personal items and books. Conditions in this dorm had been extremely congested, as the dorm that was built for only 80, and been housing 264. The girls, most all first generation “learners”, had been willing to live under these difficult circumstances in order to fulfill their dreams of going to school.
Luckily, because the girls always started a study prep session at 6 AM, none of the girls died in the incident, but they realized with horror that their school would be forced to close; their dreams having ended in a fiery blaze. Many tears were shed by the girls, the administration and the community. How could such a thing happen to girls who were already challenged who are up against such odds?
Kenya Keys has worked closely with these girls for many years. We are determined to help these girls get back to school. And it’s urgent that we do so quickly. The Form Four (Senior) girls have prepared for years to take the national exam in November that will determine their future. This exam is only offered once a year - and is coming soon - in early November! The girls MUST be back in school to prepare for, and take this exam. The government has strict requirements that must be met in order for each girl to get back to school.
Here’s what’s required:
Each girl must pay $175 towards the rebuilding of the dorm. This fee is non-negotiable and must be paid by every girl, regardless of their level of poverty.
Each girl must pay $75 for the replacement of their personal items: a mattress, bedsheet, blanket, nightgown, uniform, underwear, soap, and a large metal box to contain the personal items.
This amounts to $250/girl. If she can stay in school, she can change the whole trajectory of her life, as well as her children’s lives. That’s what education does!
$25,000 will help 100 girls get back to school. Priority will be given to the most needy and to the Form 4 girls.
The more we can raise, the more girls we can help. This is our first phase of our fundraiser and our most urgent. Once these needs are met, we will raise more to help the other girls who lost everything in the fire.
These girls are fiercely dedicated and determined not to be stopped by this devastating event.
