Kenya Girl's School Upgrades

Donation protected
The Akili Girl's Prep School  in the rural village of Obambo, Kenya , is a boarding school with over 75 beautiful young learners from the nearby Obunga slum. Akili is a special place, offering free quality education in a safe and nuturing environment from kindergarten through year six. These girls are among Kenya's poorest of the poor, and would not otherwise have access to education without donor funded schools like Akili.

[Obunga Slum, home to the Akili school girls]

The Riley Orton Foundation  , the founders of the Akili School, have launched complimentary programs to bring the girls a more well-rounded learning environment, including an after school sports program  , a group counseling program to include feminine and sexual health, and the soon-to-launch Literacy Garden  - an experiential learning playground with a library, drama coaching, empowerment learning, group sharing, etc.

This campaign is to bring much needed infrastructure repairs to the school property and grounds, including:
1. Pit Latrines ($2,500)
2. Dormitory repairs ($1,000)
3. Kitchen upgrades ($1,000)

Akili attempts to be sustainable wherever possible. For example, the girls live in an on-site dormitory and operate a garden  where they grow their own food, and their shower water is filtered for use in a permaculture project. They have a matron that prepares meals, but the kitchen is very basic and needs improvements. The latrines are in terrible need of renovation or replacement. Just a little bit of money can go a long way in Kenya, so with less than $5k, we can really give a great deal of support to this small girls school.

While these girls come from the slums of Kenya, they are among the most inspiring, clever, energetic, little children I have ever seen. They are eager for their own chance to have a full education and the empowerment that comes from a well-rounded upbringing. These funds will help make needed repairs and upgrades to their surrounding envionment that will continue to allow them the safe and nurturing environment they need to learn and thrive.

This campaign does not need to be fully funded in order to have meaningful impact for the Akili Girls - any amount raised will be very appreciated and put to great use!
