Kent was recently diagnosed with cancer and lost his job the day of diagnosis. On October 17th, Kent had surgery to remove a cancerous tumor from his pancreas along with a third of his pancreas and his spleen.
The surgery was successful in removing all the cancer. The pathology report showed no radiation or chemotherapy needed at this time. However, Kent will need routine specialized CT scans every 3 months to monitor possible signs of recurrence. He will also need regular lab work and booster shots for various types of vaccines because of his spleen removal.
Approximately one month after surgery, Kent developed some complications. He has been battling fatigue, fevers and a poor appetite. He has lost over 60 pounds in the past 2 months. After undergoing tests, it was determined that he has a leak in his pancreas, which created a fluid filled sac in his abdominal area. This is what is causing secondary inflammation, which caused all of the previously mentioned symptoms. He also has fluid in the left lower lung from the inflammation near the diaphragm.
On 11/30/17, a radiologist inserted a drain to help remove the fluid. Kent will need to return every two weeks to replace the smaller drain with a larger diameter, until they reach 18mm diameter. Each drain “upsize” requires sedation and imaging (CT/x-ray). This drain will be in place for several months.
Because of the leak, Kent had another surgery on 12/07 by a GI specialist to place a stent in his pancreas to divert the drainage to the digestive tract. This will eventually need to be removed in the next few months.
The current struggle is nutrition. Kent is trying to eat approx 2000+ calories each day to help with weight gain. His surgeon said it is common with this type of surgery for patient's to lose their appetite for most foods, so he tries to encourage his patient's to think of food like medicine, small amounts at a time and often (every 2-3 hours). He is encouraging Kent to enjoy ice cream, mashed potatoes, pasta,etc. Anything with lots of calories that he is willing to eat! He is giving Kent 2 weeks to try to increase calorie consumption and improve overall strength. If this does not improve, Kent may need a feeding tube for a few weeks.
Kent has been submitting resumes but his slow recovery has impacted his job search. Kent and Denise are seeing the medical expenses in addition to the uncertainty of when Kent will be able to work, as a sign it is time to be open to how God wants to work financially in this situation. Any help with prayers, meals and financial donations would be a blessing to them while on this journey.
A fellow Sioux Falls Christian parent and Central church member, Rollie Woodward, will be the executor of any incoming funds and overseeing all account withdrawals. His MBA and background in management make him perfect for doing this so all incoming funds have some accountability in the stewardship of the gift.
