Outtatown with CMU in South Africa
Donation protected
I'd like to do CMU's Outtatown program to South Africa. Basically, it's a gap-year program for people like me to learn about the world and understand some of the bigger problems in it, and to get a sense of how we might contribute to making it a better place.

I was originally enrolled in Outtatown's trip to Burkina Faso but this option was cancelled due to safety concerns. I'm very excited to go to South Africa instead but the only problem is, this trip costs about $8000 more! This is why I'm reaching out to family and friends to help with the expenses.
Here's a breakdown of the costs:
$250 Books/Materials
$5,125 First Semester Tuition
$5,060 Room & Board
$5,125 Second Semester Tuition
$18 Student Services Fee
$15,578 SUBTOTAL
$2,100 Airfare & Trip Cancellation Insurance (Approximate)
$17,678 TOTAL
(See here for this information on the Outtatown site.)
My church (LMBC ) has already very generously offered me a Bursary for $4,040.00 and CMU has said they'll waive $1000 of the costs to compensate for the sudden cancellation of the Burkina Faso option. I'm also eligible for a CMU matching grant of $500. My parents have already paid a $500 deposit. This brings the balance to $11,638.00
I have a summer job (in case you're interested, I'll be working here ) and I'm planning to save approximately $2000 for this trip (I'm also hoping to save some for the following year when I plan to go to university - I'd like to get a BSc and begin investigating a future in ocean sciences). My parents had been planning to contribute $2000. All this, plus a scholarship that I applied for but didn't get :( would've been enough for my original plan, but now it isn't.
To be very honest, I'm kind of uncomfortable asking for money. And if it was just about travelling around for the fun of it, I wouldn't. But if you think this program looks like something you believe in or if you think it could help me make the world a better place, I would be very (very, very) grateful for your support.
