Kenny's Surgery/Recovery

This pup was first found lying in a gutter screaming in pain and wouldn’t let anyone near him. His rescuer Kenny Thorp, heard his wailing from his car while sitting in traffic, and quickly went to help him. Kenny was able to sit with him and earn his trust and then hold him until animal control arrived. The dog was on a stray hold at the shelter for several days, but no owner ever came for him. X-rays revealed his femur and pelvis were broken and he needed immediate rescue. He is now in the care of AARF and we named this sweet dog KENNY, in honor of the man that cared enough to stop and help him and comfort him.
We have kept him comfortable on strong, effective pain medication as we started the process of his surgical consultations.
Today (9/22) is surgery day for Kenny. He is now in the very capable hands of the skilled surgeons at Sage. For those that aren’t familiar with them, they are a Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Care Center and have an amazing surgeon for Kenny. We are very confident Kenny is exactly where he needs to be to have the very best results. Today’s surgery will be to repair his broken left femur and to do the extensive restructuring of the left side of Kenny’s pelvis. This will be a very long and delicate surgery as they work to repair the breaks and align his body to take the pressure off his nerves and areas that are vital for his recovery.
X-rays revealed that there are some potential issues on the right side of his pelvis as well, but on the advice of his surgical team, we are not going to subject Kenny to that much surgery at this time. Because he is very young and should heal quickly, we are all hopeful that the repair work done on the left side will correct his alignment and the issues to the right may even become less of an issue for him over time. We will obviously closely monitor this and it will be part of his recovery plan, but everyone involved thought it was better see how his left side responds before addressing the right side. He will need the current mobility of his right side to support the physical therapy stage for his left side as part of his recovery.
Kenny’s recovery will be a minimum of 8 weeks. That means almost complete crate rest with short stints of activity for potty breaks only and as the weeks progress, he’ll be given longer periods of time and then will eventually start his physical therapy as he gains mobility again. Kenny has an amazing foster Dawn McCowan, who will be giving Kenny all of this extra supportive care he will need. AARF and Kenny are very fortunate to have found such a wonderful caretaker for him.
Many of you have asked how you can help this wonderful little dog. As you an imagine, this is a very expensive undertaking to repair his body. AARF would absolutely appreciate financial assistance towards his surgical costs and the ongoing costs of his specialized care. The initial estimates for his surgery alone are between $6,500 - $8,000 depending on if there are complications or other work necessary. These figures do not include any of his numerous follow up visits, physical therapy, medications and of course does not include if we have to have a secondary surgery for the other side of his pelvis. This is obviously a large hit to our Rescue’s already modest budget and any help we can get from our community to help this precious dog, would be very appreciated.
Some naysayers might say that it’s too much to spend on a “just a dog” but Kenny would not have any quality of life without this repair work and if we think he absolutely IS worth investing our time, money and love into. He’s a wonderful dog that will very soon, bless the lives of his eventual forever family. We believe he deserves a chance to have the future and destiny that is waiting for him.

2. You can contribute via this GoFundMe campaign. Since GFM takes a very large percentage of the funds raised, if you are able to donate via PayPal, that is preferred instead and then we will just enter your donation as an “offline” donation into GFM so that it’s reflected in the tally but not subjected to the high GFM fees.
