Hello. My name is Lindsay, and I am trying to help raise money for my brother Kenny Kieffer and his beautiful family. A little over three years ago, at the age of 34, Kenny was diagnosed with an epidermoid cyst on his brain. His doctors told him that he had a large, non-cancerous brain tumor that had likely been growing since birth; it was now covering the majority of his brain. After a long period of agonizing and debilitating pain, surgery was his only option.
With a young son at home, and his wife two months away from delivering their second child, Kenny underwent a several-hour long surgery, requiring the surgical team to drill into his head, behind his left ear. Amazingly, Kenny’s neurosurgeon was able to remove much more of the tumor than originally anticipated; close to 75%. However the tumor could not be eliminated altogether. Surgery eventually had to be halted because of the length of time Kenny was under anesthetic, and a tentative plan was made to attempt a second surgery. That surgery was quickly ruled out and the doctors predicted that since it had taken 34 years for the tumor to grow to the size it had been, Kenny should not require surgery again for 25 to 30 years.
As a result of the surgical process, Kenny began experiencing seizures and has been on anti-seizure medication for the last three years. He also has almost total hearing loss in his left ear. Despite all this, Kenny had much-needed relief from the pain and was eventually cleared to return to work with a good prognosis, and the anticipation of the remaining portion of the tumor continuing its slow growth.
A little more than three years later, now a father of three after welcoming a baby girl last year, Kenny has learned that he will again need to undergo brain surgery. He has been told that if he waits much longer than February, the doctor’s cannot ensure a positive outcome. The remaining tumor, which could not be removed due to its precarious location, has begun growing far more rapidly than anyone could possibly have predicted. While all of his doctors agree that it’s virtually impossible to remove the tumor in it’s entirety, Kenny will still have to endure rigorous surgery. For this surgery, the doctors will need to enter through his forehead.
Kenny’s wife, Terri, has been his rock and his strongest advocate throughout all of his struggles. Terri was able get Kenny’s health record reviewed by a surgical team at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, and they have agreed to take on his case. Surgery has been scheduled for mid-January, 2016. Fortunately, Kenny’s insurance will be covering his surgery and hospital stay. However, because of the expenses involved with traveling for an out-of-state hospital stay, and an extended recovery period during which they will have no regular income, not to mention having a young family back at home, Kenny and Terri need our help.
