My name is Erica Hawkins. On Sunday, 9/18, my good friend Jacqui Minor’s husband, Kenneth Minor, was coming home after spending time with friends. Upon crossing the last intersection before reaching his home, a speeding tow truck blew the red light and ended his life less than a minute from his home. To add insult to injury, the driver left the scene, and Kenny, who had been ejected, was left lying in the street. Jacqui woke up at about 3 am, realizing he wasn’t home; she noticed on the “Citizen’s App” that there had been a fatal accident right around the corner. Out of extreme concern for her husband Kenny and because he wasn’t answering his cell phone, she asked her son to walk her around the corner where their lives changed forever….
When I suggested doing a Go fund Me, Jacqui clarified that she didn’t feel comfortable asking anyone for anything. I let Jacqui know that this is one time absolutely no one would mind. And although Kenny worked at Germantown Academy, they didn’t carry a life insurance policy. Fortunately, his Mother was able to take care of the funeral. In addition to this tragedy, Jacqui, who had been diagnosed with breast cancer ten years ago, who had endured a double mastectomy and who had been cancer free, fell at work earlier this year. When Worker’s Comp finally ordered an MRI, they not only found a fracture in her spine, they also found two spots, indicating that cancer has returned and has now spread to her bones. She has been doing daily radiation and chemo treatments and now has to do this without the support of her one and only life partner since high school.
I am asking anyone reading this to look within and donate anything, whatever you can. I can’t imagine the fear of cancer returning, but with the added tragedy of losing the love and support of your spouse this way, while worrying about how you’re making rent through the New Year is unconscionable.….
