Kenia Desert Streams Camp Experience

Somos Alex y Ana y desde hace unos meses colaboramos de cerca con Karibu Sana , una iniciativa centrada en la educación de los que más lo necesitan. Este proyecto solidario liderado por Javier Aranguren se integra dentro de la Fundación Promoción Social,  dedicando sus esfuerzos a ayudar a niños sin recursos de Kibera (Nairobi, Kenia), rescatándolos de la calle para que puedan llegar a estudiar y tener un futuro dentro de un entorno que es, en muchas ocasiones , muy hostil.

Comenzamos, como con la mayoría de las ONG’s a colaborar con una donación, pero enseguida supimos que necesitábamos ayudarles un poco más. Actualmente,  264 millones de niños y adolescentes no tienen acceso a una educación de calidad digna, hay tanto por hacer, que empezamos a imaginar cómo llevar a cabo nuestro poquito. Y fue cuando Javier nos ofreció ir a Nairobi en agosto de 2019 a realizar un campamento con los niños… aceptamos sin dudar. Poco a poco nos empezaron a poner en situación acerca de los slums de Kibera donde viven los niños y donde se sitúa el colegio Desert Streams. Kibera es un slum en donde viven cerca de un millón de personas, las cuales sufren multitud de problemas como los choques étnicos, la pobreza, el paro, la violencia y las enfermedades causadas por la falta de higiene.

Era necesario que estos niños conocieran algo “Bello, divertido y con color, despertar otras realidades que les hagan olvidar por un momento el entorno en el que viven”, nos dijo Javier. “Solo de esta manera podrán tener un ideal, esforzándose en llegar a él mediante una herramienta tan importante como la que tienen a través de su educación”. Y eso decidimos hacer, una experiencia sensorial, educativa, divertida y, sobre todo, inolvidable para esos niños que merecen tanto y tienen tan poco. Actividades artísticas, escénicas, deportivas, educativas y de ocio ocuparán dos semanas de agosto de 180 niños de los slums de Kibera, las cuales llevaremos a cabo junto a educadores locales. Además este campamento servirá para garantizar la alimentación de aquellos chicos que durante el periodo de cierre de las escuelas no tienen acceso a una comida diaria en sus casas, ya que podrán encontrar aquí un lugar seguro donde garantizar su manutención y continuar su educación.

Para poder hacerlo realidad necesitamos una pequeña ayuda por tu parte, una colaboración por parte de amigos cercanos y nuevos amigos que nos permita llevar a cabo este proyecto en agosto de 2019.  Nuestras prioridades de cara a la recaudación de fondos son las siguientes: 

-        Comida de 180 niños - 180*1€/día*15 días = 2.700 €                         
-        Materiales escolares (pinturas, cuadernos, folios, libros de texto, etc.)  
-        Materiales deportivos (balones de futbol, baloncesto y volleyball, etc.)   
-        Alquiler de autobuses para excursiones     
-        TOTAL: 5.500 €
(Si recaudáramos más de lo previsto con toda vuestra ayuda, destinaríamos ese dinero al programa de Becas de educación  Karibu Sana)

We are Alex and Ana and for a few months we have collaborated closely with Karibu Sana , an initiative focused on the education of those who need it most. This solidarity project led by Javier Aranguren is part of the Fundación Promoción Social , dedicating its efforts to helping children without resources in Kibera (Nairobi, Kenya), rescuing them from the street so they can get to study and have a future within an environment that is, in many occasions, very hostile.

We began, as with most NGOs, to collaborate with a donation, but we immediately realized that we needed to help them a little more being more involved. Currently, 264 million children and adolescents do not have access to decent quality education. There is so much to do, and that´s why we began to imagine how we could do our little bit. It was when Javier offered us to go to Nairobi in August 2019 to make a camp with the children ... we accepted without hesitation. Step by step they began to put us in the situation about the slums of Kibera where the children live and where the school Desert Streams is located. Kibera is a slum where about one million people live, which suffer many problems such as ethnic clashes, poverty, unemployment, violence, and diseases caused by lack of hygiene.

It is necessary for these children to know something "Beautiful, fun and full of colorful, something able to awake other realities that make them forget for a moment the environment in which they live," Javier told us. "Only in this way can they have an idea, striving to reach it through a tool as important as their education." And that we decided to do: a sensory, educational, fun and, above all, unforgettable experience for those children who deserve so much and have so little. Artistic, scenic, sports, educational and leisure activities will take place over two weeks in August of 180 children from the slums of Kibera, which we will carry out together with local educators and will serve to guarantee their nutrition during this time. In addition, this camp will serve to guarantee the feeding of those boys who during the period of closing of the schools do not have access to a daily meal in their houses since they will be able to find here a safe place where to ensure their maintenance and to continue their education

In order to make it happen, we need little help from you, a collaboration from close friends and new friends that will allow us to carry out this project in August 2019. Our priorities for fundraising are the following:  

- 180 children's meal - 180 * 1 € / day * 15 days = 2,700 €

- Sports materials (football, basketball and volleyball balls, etc.) 
- Rental of buses for excursions
