My uncle is Coach Ken Fearson. He has been an educator, coach, and administrator in Leon County for as long as I can remember, close to 20 years.
In August of last year, only a few days into the school year, Ken got really sick and was taken by life flight to Shands Hospitals in Gainesville. It was discovered that he had a bowel obstruction and he was rushed into surgery. He was in a medically induced coma for over a week and for a while we didn't know if he would make it through.
My uncle stayed at Shands for 4 months and during that time he underwent over a dozen major and minor surgeries. These surgeries left him in a condition where his small intestine is now exposed on the outside of his body, he can not eat any solid foods, and he has to have around the clock assistance. A nurse comes to the house to change the pouch which protects his exposed organs three times a week and his IV lines, where he receives his nourishment, have to be changed twice a week. Since he's been home, Ken has had to make emergency visits to Shands Hospital at least 3 times and though he has remained strong, and is doing well, his situation is delicate and he still has 2 more major surgeries scheduled for this Spring.
Obviously, during this time Ken has been unable to work and he has been on paid leave. Unfortunately, that paid leave ends in less than a week on February 28th. If Ken returns to work, he will lose all the at home nursing care he receives and needs. This is why this page was created. Right now, Ken needs to stay focused on his recovery, getting stronger, and preparing for his next surgeries, and not be worried about going back to work or being stressed about being able to keep his home and support his family.
Will you please help me take some of the stress off of my Uncle Ken? He does so much for his family and so many people in Tallahassee and this is one time where he really, really needs your help and support. The goal is to raise $25,000 to help with medical bills and household expenses for the next 6 months.
