The Kendall Wilmot Scholarship

Donation protected
This page has been created to donate money towards The Kendall Wilmot Starfish Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship was created in memory of Kendall Carroll Wilmot who passed away suddenly in June of 2013 following her junior year at Virginia Tech.

This past school year the scholarship was rewarded to Brittany McConnell, a Hopewell High School senior athlete with a bright future. Please help Kendall's family, friends, and teammates raise money for this scholarship in order to benefit yet another student who has the dedication and compassion to touch lives and make a difference, just as Kendall did for us.

Kendall welcomed all of life’s challenges with determination and genuine compassion. Kendall was a four-year member of the Hopewell High School varsity tennis team from 2006 to 2010. Kendall also played JV Field Hockey for 2 years and Varsity Field Hockey for 2 years. She served as team captain her senior year during which she consistently demonstrated natural leadership abilities, academic excellence, outstanding athleticism, and true dedication to her sport and teammates. Kendall was the 2010 Valedictorian of Hopewell High School. Her commencement speech told the story of the starfish in which Kendall believed everyone can make a difference. The story goes as follows:

"There was a man taking a morning walk on the beach. He saw that along with the morning tide came hundreds of starfish. When the tide receded they were left behind and with the sun’s rays they would die. The tide was fresh and the starfish were alive. The man took a few steps, picked one up and threw it into the water. He did that repeatedly. Right behind him was another person who couldn’t understand what this man was doing. He caught up with him and asked, what are you trying to accomplish? There are hundreds of starfish. How can you help? What difference does it make? The man did not reply. He took two more steps, picked up another starfish and said, “It makes a difference to this one.”

Kendall continued to make a difference when she attended Va Tech. She was a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Hospitality Management Association, Eta Sigma Delta Honors Hospitality Fraternity and Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. Kendall also served on the student advisory committee to the undergraduate representatives to the Board of Visitors, and volunteered for several charities. Since Kendall was on the dean’s list for 3 years and in good academic standing, Va Tech granted her a diploma- Bachelor of Science in Business-Hospitality and Tourism Management-Magnum Cum Laude.

Kendall believed everyone can make a difference no matter how small. Kendall’s most important gifts were her genuine love, infectious smile, and spontaneous sense of humor, which she generously shared with all who knew her. Kendall’s strength and spirit set a standard of excellence for all those who follow after her.
