my sister kelsey is a second grade teacher at lucy laney elementary in north minneapolis. kels works tirelessly to create an environment that not only educates but inspires and uplifts each of her students. i've been volunteering in her classroom and have been able to see her incredible dedication first hand. it's crazy. i usually work with 5 kids at a time and afterwards i am TIRED. kels handles an entire classroom all day like a boss.
she doesn't know i'm doing this but i'm hoping to raise some money to help her buy a few essentials for her classroom. she once told me that the number one item on her class wishlist would be a lifetime supply of ticonderoga pencils (the classic yellow pencils). if you donated just $10, you would be supplying the class with 48 pencils, which would be enough for a month or two! and what's more, with plenty of pencils at hand, the kids can focus better because they won't be searching for their one pencil that's always misplaced. so keep in mind that even though my goal is $5,000 (dreaming big here) you don't have to donate a lot to make an impact.
i know there are many other important causes to donate to and if you already have one in mind, by all means donate to that one instead. but if not, i'd like you to consider how you'd feel if you skipped buying coffee or take out for a week, and instead donated $10 to kelsey's class knowing that you would be enhancing the lives of 28 kids. i promise you that the act of giving is much more powerful than spending money on something you don't really need.
if i am sending this to you, that means i feel you are a person that cares about making a difference in the world around us. in the midst of such scary times, with hate and fear running rampant- we must all rise up and actively work to make change and spread love!
