My Community Volunteer Project

Donation protected
My name is Kelly Sibanda. I am in my 4th year of Law and Justice at QUT currently working as a youth engagement officer with the Queensland African Communities Council (QACC) and the Multicultural Development Association (MDA).

So there has been something I have wanted to do for a long time and have been putting it off because of study, work and family commitments. I now realise that there will always be something in need of my attention, that there is no perfect time so you just have to start. That’s exactly what I am doing.

I will be going to Cape Town in South Africa for 4 weeks on a community volunteering program. This is through Global Work & Travel Co, an organisation that’s committed to building a better world and excels in sending people to volunteer abroad on projects that truly make a difference.

This community volunteer journey will be supporting local children succeed in both the sport field and more importantly, in the classroom. I will be assisting the community with various projects geared towards academic development and physical health, including a literacy and mathematics support program, an emergency care home and an after school care. I won’t go into details for all the projects. The emergency care home for orphaned and abandoned children aims to nurse children back to health and place them into foster care as soon as they are ready. The after school care program was established to fight against the abuse of children during after school hours when their parents/guardians are not home. It has a focus on developing important life skills like teamwork and leadership through homework support, craft making, computer literacy, reading club and educational games.

For me, this volunteer journey is very close to home. Growing up in the village of Silobela in Zimbabwe, I had dreams and hopes for the future that I am now working towards. This is something that a lot of children and young people I will be working with in Cape Town truly understand. Knowing that sharing something as simple as my time and the skills I have acquired throughout my community work and my job in Australia may unleash that untapped creative, sporting and academic talent is something I live for and cannot pass.

Your support will go a long way towards making my volunteering journey less stressful and successful. The funds you support me with will go towards travel expenses, insurance, visa and accommodation in the community share house.

I appreciate your support and I will keep you updated every step of the journey.
