Kelly’s Breast Cancer Treatment

When I think of my cousin Kelly Joy, so many distinguishing qualities flood my mind. She is JOYful, loving, kind, peaceful, gracious, warmhearted, optimistic, funny, intelligent, thoughtful, witty, a yogi, a teacher, a natural athlete, a musician, an adventure seeker, beautiful, world traveler, Aquarian, natural, emotional, empathetic, understanding, and even-tempered. She’s a dream daughter, a loving sister, a sweet niece, a cool aunt, a loyal partner, a ride or die friend, and the most amazing cousin a person could be blessed with.  I have spent many moments feeling intense gratitude to have her as a constant in my life, a built in best friend from the beginning, a sister without all the childhood arguing.  In a million years the words “35 year-old breast cancer patient” would not have entered my mind...

Yet here we are.

A few days before Christmas 2018 Kelly Joy Kaso was diagnosed with breast cancer.  At a routine GYN exam her doctor discovered a lump in her breast and Kelly was advised to have further testing immediately.  The tests began within a few days, first a sonogram, then a biopsy along with sonogram and mammogram.  Naturally the tension and anxiety grew while waiting for the results. Finally, on Friday 12/21, the last day of school before the Winter recess, the radiologist called to say that the biopsy test results were positive.  The news was devastating and shocking, incomprehensible.  Her best friend Lindsey and her mom were with her and as she spoke with the doctor, they listened and wrote down the information about what to do next.  After some time for hugs and tears, calls were made to schedule her appointments.

This was the beginning of Kel’s Christmas break, a time that would usually be to rest and recharge for the next school semester.  Instead, during the next 2 weeks Kelly had genetic blood testing, met with 3 breast surgeons, 2 oncologists, a fertility specialist, had an MRI, another sonogram and a blood test.  Various cancer treatment plans, chemotherapy, radiation and surgical options were discussed.  Hundreds of questions and phone calls and conversations continue to take place.  The decisions that Kelly has to make are both complicated and mentally and physically challenging.  They will effect her for the rest of her life.  Trying to stay present and positive has been nearly impossible at times, but she is determined and resourceful.  She has so many loving friends and family to share this journey with, and with their help she is researching many areas of holistic healing to accompany the medical treatment she will be receiving.  Kelly has begun treatment with acupuncture, zero balancing, clean(er) eating and continued yoga, meditation and exercise.  She is an amazing spirit woman and she will be cured.

At this time, plans for work logistics, medical leave options, and financial responsibilities are being considered.  There is still so much unknown that lies ahead, and the weight of it all is exhausting and overwhelming.  Seeing her go through this and knowing that after the fight she’ll be recovering in an accumulation of bills, I wanted to give everyone who wants to help an opportunity to do so.  Kelly has spent her whole life bringing JOY to those around her.  We can return the love and light that she has given others and make her burden a little lighter by donating any amount you can afford toward her medical bills.  Thank you so very much. Your support will offer her the peace of mind needed to focus all of her energy and thoughts on healing after her treatments and surgeries.  Let’s show her just how much the people she loves have her back and are fighting along her side!
