Kelly's Medical Expenses

Donation protected
Since early 2015, my gut has been uncooperative - acting like it is paralyzed. I've progressed from an altered diet, to tube feeds, then to parenteral (IV) nutrition. I've been in the hospital countless times. My career has taken a hit - stopped clinical pediatrics at the end of 2017. Starting in November 2018, I've had back to back hospital stays (longest discharge was 11 days!) at New Hanover in Wilmington, NC & UNC in Chapel Hill, NC. Prior to this time, it has been rough, as many of you know but the last few months have been exceptionally straining.

How to Help?
I've struggled to write this post, to answer this question, to be vulnerable to you - my friends who ask this all the time. Humbly I share my needs with you. Please do no feel obliged. I put this out here for the people looking for ways to help. If you're not in a place to help - go away & come back another day :) I will trust that if you read on, you can / want to help. See blog link at bottom for more details of my story and other ways to help.

Expenses:
1. Medical Expenses: health insurance (not employed) with deductible, out of pocket maximum
2. Medical Equipment / Services not covered: shower chair, braces & equipment, heat and massage therapies, enteral feeding and IV feeding supplies, OTC medications
3.  Multiple trips to Mayo Clinic in MN, Stanford, UNC for higher level of speciality care: Travel expenses as well as out of pocket medical expenses (not fully covered by insurance); e.g. >$12,000 due to Mayo, $1,200 for TPN, tube feeds to Option Care
4. Family travel / missed work to be with me when not local (UNC, Nevada): flights, gas, hotels, food - 8 day stay at UNC was $1600.

Disclaimers:
- Both this page and the blog are works in progress & will be updated - in response to changes in health, clarifying questions & improving understanding.
- I do have a great individual own occupation disability insurance policy. This policy is intended to provide for monthly living expenses while I am not able to do clinical pediatrics. It pays through age 67 years, adjusting with inflation. I'm happy to go into more details if desired.
