Kekere Freedom School

Donation protected
Kekere Freedom School was founded by two women of color and is based in Ypsilanti, Michigan, on the occupied land of the Anishinaabe. We are an educational organization dedicated to decolonizing childhood through work in our homeschool cooperative, childcare collective and community partnerships. Our mission is to work collectively to honor the power of young people and liberate learners of all ages. We envision a thriving social ecosystem where all children, and their loved ones, are celebrated and live with joy and purpose.

Kekere is inspired by the Freedom Schools of the Civil Rights Movement, the wisdom and resilience of our ancestors and love for our grandchildren’s grandchildren. Our community is specifically designed to affirm families which include Black children, Indigenous children, children of the global majority, and 2SLGBTQIA+ folx.

At Kekere we use the model of head, heart and hands as a transformative practice of justice and equity through the human presence. In supporting our vision for 2020/2021 you will be helping to redistribute wealth and invest in marginalized communities. The following are ways in which your donation will support our mission:

Head

-We will continue to build our child-led learning cooperative as a space where we seek “liberation through play” - empowering young people to inspire and create change in their communities
-We will continue to provide accessible community education materials for family-based learning rooted in love, youth empowerment, radical imagination, and ancestral wisdom
-We will continue to do our own learning and encourage growth among our families through offering professional development and community building

Heart

-We will continually affirm our own active commitment to divest from systems that disproportionately harm people of color and 2SLGBTQIA+ folx
-We will learn alongside community leaders as we rebuild family structures and lift up Black children, Indigenous children, children of the global majority and 2SLGBTQIA+ folx
-We will offer our space for community events which will honor the wisdom and resilience of our ancestors as we dare to create a world of love and hope for our grandchildren’s grandchildren

Hands

-We will financially support our children by providing scholarships for families seeking a safe and intentional space for their children
-We will consistently partner with Black- and Indigenous-owned businesses and other leaders of color to re-distribute wealth and support community-led growth in Washtenaw County
-We will continue to seek out and support the excellence that is modeled by our community artists, makers, writers, and other leaders as we facilitate multi-generational, hands-on, place-based learning for all
