Help Gnarley Fight Cancer

Gnarley is a Lab Newfoundland mix and my best friend. I rescued him when he was just 16 weeks old from the local Humane Society. Nine years later, we are completely inseparable and face a new battle together.
Just four weeks ago I found two small masses on Gnarley’s right elbow that I hadn’t felt before. They were hard, the size of a large grape, and almost felt like rocks under his skin. I brought Gnarley to the vet where they took a sample of the lumps and examined the cells under a scope. After reviewing the vet told me that the cytology showed irregular cell clumping and suggested we send it to the pathologist for further review. A painstaking week goes by before we heard back with the results and they weren’t good. Gnarley was diagnosed with a type of cancer called soft tissue sarcoma.
His vet suggested we remove the masses but explained that this would be a difficult area to operate on and that we may have to do follow up with another surgery or radiation if the margins weren’t clean.
He had his first surgery on 3/21 and a week and a half later we received news that Gnarley’s cancer was Stage I which was good for a long-term prognosis. However, there was incomplete excision of the tumor and it extended to the deep margins. Our vet explained she was aggressive with removing as much tissue as possible, but she kept hitting bone. The best option to prevent the cancer from growing and potentially having to amputating his limb is radiation.
We met with the Oncologist for the first time and she was very positive about Gnarley’s radiation therapy. She said there is an 85-90% chance we can control the tumor long term with the radiation but before we start radiation she wanted us to get an abdominal ultrasound and chest rays completed. Gnarley had both done a week ago and we were cleared to have radiation.
The Treatment and Costs: Gnarley’s radiation treatment is extensive. He will need to be at the Oncologist for 18 days in a row where he will be put under general anesthesia every day to be able to perform the procedure. The cost of this therapy is about $5,000.
