Keep a Heart Beating Skagit

If you could do something to save a life—would you?

Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is a leading cause of death in the United States with over 360,000 victims each year.  An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is the only effective treatment for restoring a regular heart rhythm during a SCA.  Unfortunately, for each minute that treatment with an AED is delayed, the victim’s chance of survival decreases by 10%.  People in rural communities are at greatest risk for death during a SCA because of the time that it takes for emergency medical personnel to reach them.  Access to AEDs and Community Training and Education are crucial to insuring that that a person who suffers a SCA survives.
The rural communities of East Skagit County are particularly at risk for death during a SCA due to geography and limited access to timely emergency medical services.  Currently there are only 5 known AED devices in the Concrete/Marblemount area.  Two of these AEDs are portable devices in Sheriff’s vehicles, which are useful if the Sheriffs happen to be in the vicinity of a SCA victim, but are prone to response time issues.  The other three are located in the Concrete Senior Center, the East Community Resource Center and the Concrete High School.    The AED at the Concrete High School is so old and out of date that the school has difficulty finding replacement batteries and parts.  The AED located at the East Community Resource Center is only two years old, however current staff are not trained on how to use it and there is no budget for replacement parts.

“Keep a heart beating Skagit!” is a project initiated by “Team Courageous” of the Leadership Skagit Class of 2015.  Team Courageous will place four high quality life-saving AED devices in Concrete and Marblemount, at sites which have been found to be central locations and places where the greatest number of community members congregate.  The sites include:  Concrete High School, the Red Apple Grocery Store, the Marblemount Community Center, and the Concrete Theater.  In addition Team Courageous will provide the required AED trainings, conduct demonstrations for staff and community members as well as educate the communities on where AEDs are located.  In order to sustain the project, Team Courageous is partnering with the Community Health Outreach Programs through United General District 304 to insure that there are adequate funds for replacement parts and future required trainings.   Depending on available funds, Team Courageous will consider additional sites in Skagit County.

Team Courageous is committed to raising $12,000 for its “Keep a heart beating Skagit!” project.  The total AED package cost for per site is $2500.  The package includes the AED unit, a wall mount storage case, adult pads, pediatric pads, signage, required trainings, required prescription and funds to sustain the unit for a minimum of 10 years.  We ask you to consider saving a life by purchasing, or helping to purchase, an AED package.  Donations are 100% tax deductible.  Donors of $2500 or over will be recognized with a gold plaque at the AED site location.  Donors of $1250 or more will be recognized with a silver plaque at the AED site location.  Your donation could save a life!
