Keep Your Head Above Water

Donation protected
On September 21st, Ian Clark, president of Kingston Coalition Against Poverty, will tread water at the Gord Downie Memorial Pier for an amount of time to be determined by the amount of money raised. The money will go, split five ways evenly, to Martha's Table, Kingston Street Mission, Partners in Mission Food Bank, Lunch By George, and AMS Food Bank. The length of time will be determined by the following:

1 minute for every $25 raised up to 1 hour.
1 minute for every $50 raised after 1 hour and up to 3 hours.
1 minute for every $100 raised after 3 hours.

The choice of treading water is a deliberate one. The experience of living in poverty can feel much like treading water. All of your energy is expended just trying to survive, and although you can feel your stamina depleting, there's no way out in sight. You know you can't do it forever, but you don't have another option.

Just as Ian's five digits on each hand will help his head stay above the water, we've chosen to give the proceeds to five organizations that make surviving poverty less painful. While Ian gets to come out of the water at some point (we hope after a very, very long time), we encourage everyone to think about the experiences of those who don't know when, or if, they will get to stop treading water, and to think about the ways that we can help make it easier to escape poverty, or better yet, to eradicate it altogether.

Our rain dates are September 22nd and September 28th, depending on the nature and severity of whatever would make us need a rain date. In this case, "rain date" doesn't necessarily mean rain, as it would have to be raining pretty hard for us to postpone.
