Keep Wind Haven Farm Flowers Blooming

Donation protected
Wind Haven Farm is a specialty cut flower farm located in Eastern VA.  My husband Paul and I started this business in the last recession.  He grew up on a veggie farm, and I worked there for 3 years with the veggies and flowers before I decided I would like to have our own cut flower farm.  We started small, just our front yard, then the back yard, then Paul's brother's yard, then we rented 9 acres of soybean field and converted it into hundreds of rows of cut flowers.  Four years ago my husband Paul was able to quit his job and work on our farm full time.  We have worked, and scraped, and created this business from scratch. Last year we employed 8 people, this year we had lined up to hire 10.  We are unsure of what the future holds for our current business model, and we may have to reinvent ourselves again.  This is our 7th season here on the farm, and it is now our only livelihood and dream.

Our primary sales method has been through wholesale to Florists, Restaurants, Grocery Stores, and CSA operations.  Our florists and restaurants were about half of our business, they are losing all their spring weddings and events, which is a majority of their business.  Which means,  this is a majority of our business as well.

We have all these lovely spring flowers that are starting to bloom, and we are unsure if we will be able to sell them.  We are continuing on in whatever capacity we can.  Seeding, planting, and harvesting for what orders we do have.  We have opened an honor box front porch market to try to add some additional income, and the support from the community has been amazing.  It is not enough though to offset our bills that have built up as we spent money to gear up for our spring season in hopes of being able to repay the debt when flower sales picked up.  As flower farmers we have to plan 6-8 months or more in advance to keep the blooms coming.  We are doing everything we can to stay afloat, and to keep our two employees here and working safely at the farm, without them we can not continue to keep up with everything by ourselves.  If we do not plant seeds now, we will have no flowers blooming in the summer to sell.   We need a some additional support to keep the Wind Haven blooms coming.  Anything you can do would be amazing.   Thank you so much for your support in this difficult time, and choosing to support our little flower farm.
