Keep The Spear Burning

Donation protected
The Burning Spear newspaper conducts an annual fund drive in August, calling on donations for our Mafundi Lake Sponsor-a-Prisoner Fund that ships Spears free each month to over 500 prisoners throughout the U.S. Our goal is to raise $2,000 to “Keep The Spear burning!”

The concept of “Black August” was initiated by African political prisoners in the 1970s to recognize the liberation struggle of African people and the resistance from inside the walls.

Throughout the month of August, we promote the theme of African resistance and emphasize the importance of black community controlled media as a critical form of resistance and part of the struggle to win self-determination. We raise up the many key African revolutionary dates that fell in August.

This year is the 100-year anniversary of the adoption of the Red, Black and Green flag by the African nation, as so determined at the Convention of Marcus Garvey’s United Negro Improvement Association at Madison Square Garden in New York City, attended by over 20,000 African people from around the world. August 13 is “Flag Day” for the African Nation. Throughout August, we promote the African People’s Socialist Party as the incipient government of the African Nation, carrying on the legacy of Garvey through our institutions.
