In 2014, I opened a tiny printmaking studio in Fort Lauderdale because I believed that printmaking brings people together and that a thriving print shop is a vital sign of a healthy arts ecosystem.
That dream grew into what is now Miami Paper & Printing Museum (aka IS Projects), South Florida’s only public-access printmaking and book arts studio. I'm so grateful that it has become a space for artists, students, educators, and curious creatives to come together and get inky.
We offer access to some of the largest etching presses in South Florida, screen printing facilities, a full letterpress shop with one of the largest collections of antique type in the region, bookbinding equipment, papermaking facilities, and more. We've taught thousands of people and built an intergenerational community.
In 2021, our former building was sold. We had to move 50,000 pounds of equipment with only a few months’ notice. Thankfully, we found a home in Miami’s Little River neighborhood—thanks to our amazing community and our new landlords who were excited to bring a printshop like ours into the neighborhood.
While the new space is incredible and we love the neighborhood, it was a stretch financially and we just haven't been able to make it work. The landlord has been patient with us but we got news at the end of June that our time was up.
Now, our lease ends on July 31, and we are not able to renew. We need to be out of our building on July 31st and have over 50,000lb of equipment to move. The quote from the movers is really big to move our entire studio out, store it until we can find a new home, and then move it in to our new home.
Why This Matters
Printmaking is foundational to artists who want to have a sustainable career. Warhol, Rauschenberg, and Johns were all printmakers at heart. Christo and Jeanne-Claude would not have been able to make their massive public works without printmaking to think through ideas while creating small works that they could sell to generate funding for their large works.
The studio is a place where people can come together and have conversations, collaborate, and learn from each other around the press. It's a community that works together to keep art-made-by-humans alive.
If this studio disappears, South Florida loses a vital piece of its arts ecosystem.
What Your Donation Supports
Your gift helps us:
- Hire movers to safely move and store our equipment until we find a new home
- Preserve access to printmaking, book arts and papermaking equipment
- Give us time to find a safe home that will be the hub of printmaking in Miami for many years to come.
(Those of y'all who know us know that we've have moved all of this equipment with friends, family, and staff before. So why do we need to hire movers this time? Well, The timeline is way shorter than ever, Ingrid has a 4 month old baby, Amber is moving to Raleigh (we're very happy for her), Brooke is in the middle of a home renovation, and the job is too big without all of those factors )
The freedom of the press is guaranteed only to those who own one - A. J. Leibling
So let's make sure Miami owns one!
