Donate to help Save Barton Creek Association hire a campaign organizer and increase our capacity to effectively organize against wastewater pollution! A permit has been filed that seeks approval to pipe up to 92,000 gallons per day of treated sewage into Long Branch, a tributary of Barton Creek. The proposed sewage plant would be near the intersection of U.S Hwy 290 and Sawyer Ranch Road. This would cause algae blooms, risks to aquatic life, and potential danger to recreational users downstream.  There are many alternatives to putting polluting wastewater effluent into small streams like Barton Creek including applying it to land and beneficially reusing it on landscaping. One individual's profit motive shouldn't be allowed to ruin the creek for the miles of downstream users.  Save Barton Creek Association has been organizing opposition to this permit. We received a $7,000 grant from Patagonia to work on this permit and a broader campaign against wastewater pollution.   Help us match that and raise another $7,000 to increase our effectiveness and allow us to hire a part time wastewater campaign organizer. We need your help! Additional Facts-- A City of Austin study shows this plan would cause algae blooms for miles downstream, resulting in low-oxygen levels that kill aquatic species and harm their habitats. Wastewater plants in Texas have a bad history or plant failures and spills leading to contaminants like e. coli bacteria in waterways. This is especially concerning for well-owners and those recreating downstream.  There has never been a direct stream discharge of wastewater effluent in the contributing zone of the sensitive Edwards Aquifer.  One individual's profit motive shouldn't be allowed to ruin the creek for miles of downstream users.  The treatment plant needs approval from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), the state regulating agency. Unfortunately this pollution threat is not limited to this single permit. Our friends are fighting similar threats into waterways region-wide including in the Blanco River and Honey Creek.
