<div>QUEER MUSEUM VIENNA (QMV) was founded at the beginning of 2020 and is a relatively new initiative working with limited financial resources. Therefore, the team works mostly voluntarily for and from the community to establish a space for Queer culture and art. We fight against patriarchal structures and engage in activism for LGBTQIA+ rights. By gathering marginalised narratives and underrepresented artistic positions, we make a strong statement for diversity, inclusion and self-determination.

<div>QMV has been the first museum in Vienna that offers all our exhibition entries, events and educational programs entirely for free. Keeping all of our program free of charge is a priority to us to provide low-threshold accessibility and to reach audiences regardless of their financial possibilities.

<div>At the moment, we do not receive any permanent funding and our funding from public institutions is project-based. We put all our effort into running the museum and applying for permanent state funding, which might still take a while to be granted. In the meantime, we still have fixed costs to cover - these include our rent (~18.000€ per year) as well as equipment and resources needed for community-oriented events. The funding for our upcoming exhibitions, events and workshops is currently not yet certain. But QMV asserts that Queer art and culture need this space!

<div>Before moving into our own temporary space at Otto Wagner Areal, we have already curated and organised events and exhibitions at various places: Volkskundemuseum Wien, Belvedere21, in Depot, at art universities, art fairs and protests. Despite spotlight exhibitions in various spaces, no major institution in Vienna has so far devoted itself permanently and comprehensively to the subject, either in its collecting activities or in its exhibition practice. Our last exhibition was the first tin* (trans, inter, non-binary) only exhibition of Austria!

Daher arbeitet das Team größtenteils ehrenamtlich für und aus der Community heraus, um einen Raum für queere Kultur und Kunst zu schaffen. Wir kämpfen gegen patriarchale Strukturen und engagieren uns für die Rechte von LGBTQIA+. Indem wir marginalisierte Narrative und unterrepräsentierte künstlerische Positionen zeigen, setzen wir ein starkes Zeichen für Vielfalt, Inklusion und Selbstbestimmung.

<div>Das QMV war das erste Museum in Wien, das alle seine Ausstellungen, Veranstaltungen und Vermittlungsprogramme völlig kostenlos zur Verfügung gestellt hat. Unser gesamtes Programm weiterhin gratis anzubieten ist unsere Priorität, um einen niederschwelligen Zugang zu ermöglichen und ein diverses Publikum unabhängig von finanziellen Möglichkeiten zu erreichen.

<div>Zurzeit erhalten wir keine dauerhafte Finanzierung; unsere Förderungen durch öffentliche Einrichtungen sind projektbezogen. Wir bemühen uns, den Betrieb des Museums fortzuführen und dauerhafte staatliche Förderungen zu erhalten. Bis wir dieses Ziel erreichen, haben wir Fixkosten zu decken - dazu gehören unsere Miete (ca. 18.000 € pro Jahr) sowie die für gemeinschaftsorientierte Veranstaltungen benötigte Ausrüstung und Ressourcen.

Trotz Spotlight-Ausstellungen in verschiedenen Räumen hat sich bisher keine größere Institution in Wien dauerhaft und umfassend dem Thema gewidmet, weder in ihrer Sammeltätigkeit noch in ihrer Ausstellungspraxis.
