Help us, please. Please support the Watermen's Museum in historic Yorktown Virginia, first, by sharing this message with others and, second, by making a donation to help us overcome COVID Impacts.
We're a small museum located in the village where the last major battle of the Revolutionary War was fought and won in 1781. We tell the story of the people who have made their living on or from the water: Virginia Indians, Colonists, Sailors, Marines, Seafood Harvesters, Aquaculture growers, etc. We also teach people how to be good stewards of our water resources and about the effects of pollution, sea level rise, and land subsidence.
Through the generosity of people like you, our donations have been up significantly this year. But still, the COVID Pandemic has hurt us financially. Since March, our school programs have nearly all cancelled, leaving us less than 5 percent of our normal attendance. The 9 major annual fundraiser events we normally conduct have been force-cancelled or severely restricted, leaving us with less than 15 percent of our normal revenues. All Friday concerts have been cancelled. And, overall museum attendance is down nearly 60 percent for the year.
As you can see, like many small non-profit organizations, we have been severely impacted by COVID restrictions. We're fortunate that our employees and nearly all our volunteers and members have escaped the ravages of this virus. But, our Museum can surely benefit from your help.
Of course, some of the donated money must be used to pay salaries for our two full-time employees and to pay utilities, both survival necessities. But, we also plan to use as many of the donations as we can to create virtual learning and expand our outdoor learning capabilities.
So, please donate what you can to help us continue to teach our rich history and how to preserve our land and water resources.
