Keep OnceFallen.com in service for 2020
Donation protected
Since 2007, OnceFallen.com has become a valuable resource for returning citizens forced onto the government blacklist known as the “Sex Offense Registry.” OnceFallen offers a variety of services including the information on the website, housing and resource lists, prisoner outreach, media appearances, and a point of contact for those in need of assistance. Everything I have offered has always been free of charge, and has been backed by my own personal expenses and the generous donations of those who feel my work is worth the investment. However, support has been on a decline since 2016. Last year’s donations were nearly half of 2018 levels and merely a third of 2016 levels. The year 2019 has been a particularly difficult year for me personally, including a house fire, SLAPP Suits attempting to silence my activism, and personal attacks by representatives from rival organizations.
Being a one-man operation makes assisting others more difficult, but I’ve managed to assist over 300 individuals with various needs by phone, email, and letter. In addition, the Corrlinks Informational Newsletter (ICoN), which offers free services to prisoners using correctional email, has nearly 500 subscribers, and many ICoN readers share newsletters with others. I’ve printed out dozens of information packets for prisoners. Prison outreach has grown into my most requested area of assistance in 2019 (along with housing leads). I also joined with a group of anti-registry activists in attending the SMART Office Symposium in July 2019, where we challenged the federal organization responsible for promoting the sex offense registry. In addition, readership for the OnceFallen.com website was over 218,000 in 2019. I also answer letters addressed to Sex Offender Solutions and Education Network (SOSEN).
My plans for 2020 involve strengthening prisoner outreach, updating the website to a more modern design, and starting an art show project utilizing the art collected for the September 2018 Art Protest. While I don’t have any public awareness event plans for the coming year, I would be open to engaging in some form of public awareness event. Primarily expenses are a new computer replacing the one salvaged in the fire ($420), Website fees (increasing to $150 this year), stamps/envelopes/paper/ printer toner (Estimated $300), with the rest covering miscellaneous expenses, including the GoFundMe fees collected (similar to Paypal, 2.9% plus 30 cents each transaction). I do not spend a single dime on personal expenses, and in the event I engage in a public event, I stay in inexpensive hotels and find the cheapest transportation rates, and I don't even use donation money for my meals.
It seems like a lot to ask for at once but it is better than asking throughout the year. Compared to the other groups, OnceFallen has a low overhead and I do all I can to cut costs while providing this valuable resource. So please consider donating or I won’t be able to cover the costs to keep the services I offer going.
