For as long as I can remember, I've been someone who takes care of others and never asks for anything in return. But today, I must set aside my pride because too many people are counting on me.

<div>My name is Linda, and I own Linda’s Creative Gifts in New Providence, NJ. For years, I dreamed of creating a space where local artists could showcase their work, and in 2009, I opened a tiny storefront in Stirling, NJ. In 2016, I moved to a larger space in New Providence to support even more artists. Today, my store carries the work of over 30 artists, many of whom rely on my store for income to support their families. I also employ five part-time workers who are depending on their paychecks.

<div>In addition to offering one-of-a-kind products from local artisans, I’m incredibly proud of the line of products we carry made by US families with developmentally disabled children and companies that are run by or employ people with disabilities. My store carries gift baskets made with these products, along with those created by local artists. I also have a high school student with special needs who volunteers at the store twice weekly to learn the business world and gain real job experience. I am trying to show my community that people with disabilities are talented, reliable workers who deserve every opportunity to shine.

<div>Like many businesses, we were hit hard during the pandemic. After three months of forced closure and no income, I applied for every grant and loan I could but was denied for being too small (too few employees). Eventually, I secured an EIDL loan, which allowed me to cover outstanding bills and rent, but with accrued interest and repayment now due, the balance ($34,193.49) is overwhelming. Even though I was placed on a temporary disaster repayment plan, I still face the looming pressure of the full repayment soon.

<div>This year has brought even more challenges. In early 2024, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Thankfully, my cancer is in remission now, but the treatments and surgery took much of my energy away from the store. To add to the burden, the store’s HVAC system needs replacing, costing around $5,000 - which is the part I must cover in accordance with my lease. The heat this summer drove customers away, and without the repairs, my store will not survive.

This store is not just my dream but a lifeline for local artists, my employees, and the developmentally disabled community who rely on it for income and purpose.
