Ever been stuck between a rock and a hard place? It’s not an exclusive club. We’ve all been there. Podcasting is expensive; even more expensive when you do it solo. The overhead can be overwhelming when you’re doing it without financial support.
Besides the monthly subscription fees and yearly fees to keep a podcast online; there are unexpected hurdles, like upgrading subscriptions, mobile phone charges and broken hardware.
That’s the predicament I find myself in now. My Alien Life Podcast is literally on the front side of a two week long hiatus that could potentially never end. My workhorse of a 27 inch iMac computer, without warning, DIED. I did pay $220 to have an expert dive into the weeds and collect over a terabyte of data and save it to an external hard drive. I am so thankful to have those shows in a box sitting in front of me, along with all the graphics and the hundreds of pages of notes I have taken over the years. The show data is priceless.
Why is THAT computer so important? The easy answer is: I don’t have time to use anything else. Between finding guests, communicating with potential guests, emailing former guests, creating ads, typing notes, writing a book and editing, there isn’t much time left in the day. It is important for me to call the guest, tape the show, edit the show in two hours. I also have very limited time to produce all the media you see. I’ve been involved with podcasting for over a decade and my interaction with a machine is important. I have kids, businesses, a wife and a commitment to make all those things function in harmony. Family first.
I have shaped my world around a machine that makes my life easier. I can’t chase the learning curve for another computer without My Alien Life suffering. My listeners count on me.
They message me night and day asking about the next show.
So that’s where I am. It’s embarrassing to say I can’t shell out anything to replace a computer. It’s true. I have never asked anything from my listeners. I have always wanted to be present in your lives and provide you free entertainment that’s real. Real people, with real stories. The story behind the experience. We’ve done that. I want to keep doing that.
