It has been just over two months since my beloved wife Meg passed away suddenly from cardiac arrest. She was my soulmate, my companion, my confidant, and the mother of my two beautiful sons. She was a friend to many, a professional chef, an artisan who loved crafts and soapmaking. She helped fill our home with warmth, joy, art, music, books, and the food she loved preparing for our family, friends, and guests.
She was only 46 years old. We thought we still had many years of happiness in front of us, but now my mission is to preserve the memory of her life in a permanent, public way that will not soon fade.
One of the major threads running through our lives together was a love of culture and the arts. Both of us have a performing arts background, and both of us love theater, and music, and books. I have a treasured collection of books from the Library of America . The LoA is a non-profit organization whose mission is to preserve America's literary tradition including fiction, non-fiction, journalism, plays, poetry, and historical narratives by printing high-quality hardcover collectible volumes. As part of its mission, the LoA runs the Guardian of American Letters fund , which allows members of the public to select a volume to preserve in perpetuity and guarantee it remains in print with an endowment of $75,000. Each volume that has been endowed will feature the name of the donor - or the person in whose memory the donation is being made - on an acknowledgement page of every future printing of the book selected for endowment.
The money raised in this fundraiser will be used to endow a volume in the LoA collection in loving memory of Meg. I can think of no more appropriate way to honor her and keep her memory alive than to ensure that her name is in every future edition of a volume in their collection. It is a final love letter and tribute to my beautiful, beloved Meg.
