Keep LetterMo.com Up and Running

One letter out each day, for one month. Reply to every letter you receive. It seems like a simple thing, but for me the Month of Letters provides huge returns. Over the years I have made friends, shared stories both happy and sad, and celebrated my pen pals' triumphs with them. Some letters have included handmade gifts, photographs, art, or tea. Writing to others encouraged my own creativity, which in trying times I find healing. The Month of Letters is not just a website, but a thriving community based on building connections; an offline network of sorts.

When the founder of Month of Letters stepped back from maintaining the community and its main online space, Lettermo.com, a group of volunteers stepped forward to fill the role of administrators and moderators for the beloved community. And while the project has continued, the cost of hosting, domain registration, and security for the site has become untenable, as it has not been successfully untangled from the personal finances of the founder.

The LetterMo volunteer admins (including me) have determined that 2023 will be the last year of the LetterMo website if we cannot get the money to cover the costs of maintaining the site, its web hosting and security. We are making plans for a long-term solution, but in the short term, we are seeking donations from the LetterMo community to cover the costs of maintaining the site through LetterMo 2024. If we are unable to raise the $1,000 US to secure web hosting, domain name registration and security, the LetterMo.com site will cease to exist in its current format.

We want to keep the community going, and if we cannot raise the necessary funds, we'll be looking at other options, such as moving to existing platforms that may require their own registration.

If you'd like to help keep the LetterMo community alive via its website, the volunteer admins would gladly accept any financial or time contributions you can make. Moving forward with the site means establishing a more formal admin group, and making updates to the site to reduce costs without losing the core functionality.

So, if you are able, we'd love your help. If you care to contribute financially, this is where you can do so. If you'd like to contribute your time and expertise, we'll be asking for volunteers via the LetterMo site. Together we can reimagine the community website, and set it up to be sustainable without taking advantage of the founder's unprecedented generosity.
