Keep Kev Kicking

In September 2018 our Dad who has barely been sick a day in his life came down with what he thought was the flu. When it didn’t go away he visited the doctor. As soon as he walked in the Doctor knew there was something wrong so sent him to the hospital for a scan.

Dad was diagnosed with a grade 4 glioblastoma (basically, a pretty bad brain tumour) the tumour is across both sides of his frontal lobes. Less than 24 hours later he was in surgery having as much of it removed as possible. Due to the location of the tumour they couldn’t remove it all so we had to rely on 6 weeks of radiation then months of Chemo to fight the tumour.

We all stayed positive, if anyone was going to defeat this thing it was Mr Positivity himself, the tumour and the treatment had some side effects but Dad continued to live his life, walking 3 mornings a week, coffee and lunch dates with friends down on Koornang road and he and Mum even managed to get away and spend a week in the Queensland sun.

In February 2019 Dad developed a cough and was a bit short of breath, he had also become a little bit weak. He went in to the hospital to get checked out and was admitted. They discovered he had some blood clots and that his tumour had grown. This has meant that unfortunately the radiation and chemo haven’t worked. Surgery is no longer an option, so prolonging his life is all we have left.

The doctors have recommended a medication called Avastin. Like all medication there are no guarantees but when it works it stops blood vessels forming which in Dad’s case will stop the tumour from growing. The medication is given via IV infusion every 2 weeks and we have heard some promising stories about its success. The biggest problem with this medication is that it is not subsidised and is very expensive at almost $5000 per treatment. We didn’t hesitate to say yes and start this treatment as soon as possible. A few days after Dad had his first treatment he had a bleed that caused some weakness in dads arm and leg. This has been quite debilitating for him meaning he has lost the ability to even get out of bed without assistance.

They don’t think the bleed was related to the treatment but it was another hurdle in the path to get Dad home.

Now to Keep Kev Kicking we will need some specialised equipment to ensure he is comfortable and safe at home and he and Mum can be back together, fighting this tumour as one.

This is where we reach out to you, so many family and friends have asked us what they can do to help and right now the best way you can help Dad is by making a contribution towards his treatment and the associated costs of that.

Dad always says “inch by inch it’s a cinch”, replace those inches with dollars and we can get there to ensure Dad comes home to our Mum and they can sit on their deck together again as they have been for the last 45 years.

Thank you so much for all your support so far on this incredibly difficult journey.

Lots of love

Megan, Sarah, Lizzie and Hannah.
