Keep Jason Lopez in College

I have known Jason since he was a 6th grader in my English Language Arts and Social Studies classes.  He was also my student two years later, as an 8th grader.  It was my pleasure to have his older brother in my class several years prior, during which time, their oldest brother was killed in an incident of gun violence.  One thing I will never forget in all my years of teaching is how Jason came up to school the day after his family’s unspeakable tragedy to collect homework for all of the children.  His dedication to education is unparalleled.  Even in the face of great tragedy, his family could not be more committed to learning.  Ironically, it was through another great tragedy that Jason and I reconnected.  The recent shooting of a former student of mine and friend of Jason’s reframed the importance of education and his commitment to it.  

Jason moved halfway across the country to attend Wilberforce University.  He completed his FAFSA and essays on his own and continues to wait and hope for financial aid. He has big dreams of a career in the STEM field. 

Jason is one of the most kind and respectful young men I have ever known.  Even in elementary school, he was known among the teaching staff as being wise beyond his years.  Jason was the first to refocus his rowdy classmates or move his seat to the front of the class to reduce his own distractions.  I have never had as hard of a worker, before or after, Jason.  He is one of a kind young man, who enriches a classroom with his work ethic and sense of humor.  I have no doubt that Wilberforce will have the same incredible experience each of Jason’s teachers have had.  Please give, if you can, to help keep Jason there.
