Keep Jackie Housed

The Flood

In mid-November, Jackie’s condo flooded, causing extensive damage and unsanitary living conditions. The flood was due to an issue with the sewer line, and the flood water was contaminated with human waste.

Jackie is a white, trans, nonbinary, queer, and disabled activist. They are also neurodiverse, visually impaired, and have Lyme disease. They’re unable to work full-time due to their health issues and have been unable to find part-time work.

Damages and Costs

We’re trying to raise $25,000 for Jackie to repair damages and find alternate housing while their condo is being repaired and cleaned—and we could really use your help. The repairs needed include:

Replacing large sections of the drywall;
Replacing the bathroom flooring
Replacing sections of the carpet; and
Replacing the cabinets.

Insurance will cover some of these costs, but first Jackie must pay a $20,000 deductible. It’s estimated they’ll need an additional $5,000 to pay for alternate housing and to replace items not covered by insurance, such as clothes and computer equipment.

About Jackie

Jackie continually amazes me with how thoughtful they are—how passionate they are about helping people and making sure everyone feels included and welcome wherever they go. I’m humbly asking you to help give Jackie the same support and generosity they have given to their communities.

Throughout their life, Jackie has been a supportive member in many communities; participating in demonstrations and community organizing, providing support and guidance to people navigating government systems to access benefits, and more. Despite Jackie’s limited resources they’ve shared their food and living space with people who otherwise would have gone hungry and unhoused. They’re currently living with someone who would not otherwise have housing.

Last year, Jackie was the primary caretaker for their long-term partner during her cancer treatment and hospice, and they continue to be a caretaker in their community—often providing peer counselling and trauma doula work.

Why We Need You

This year has been difficult for everyone, and some people have been more affected than others. If you are someone who has been able to remain financially stable during the pandemic, please consider making a donation to help Jackie and their housemate stay in their home.

If you can’t comfortably donate money, please consider sharing this with friends and family to get the word out. I know $25,000 is a lot of money, so let’s get this out to as many people as possible!

Your support, whether it’s financial or helping spread the word, is so powerful and will make such a huge difference!

With Gratitude,

Jackie and Friends
