Keep Garrett Dancing

We need your help....
Hi! My name is Garrett Janiak. I am 16 and will be a junior at Metropolitan School of the Arts (MSA) Academy this fall. I have found my passion....but we are lacking the funds to do it alone. I have been raised by my grandmother since I was two. About 9 years ago my grandfather died and my retired grandmother has been alone in the challenge of raising me and taking care of all my needs. I have always liked to sing and had been a competitive spring board diver since I was 7.  Three years ago I took a Musical Theater summer workshop at MSA and discovered I liked to dance and was good at it (diving helped). She recognized my talents and encouraged me to pursue them. When we discovered MSA Academy it seemed like an answer to both my pursuit of talent and my academic challenges. Her resources are running out and she has health problems that keep her from working. In the past she would refinance our home and be able to receive enough money to partially fund the school and her social security would pay the rest. With the increase in Interest Rates that is no longer a feasible option. In addition, tuition has gone up. What I'm asking for is most of the tuition. We will still have to pay the rest of the tuition, private lessons, other MSA classes, audition fees, costume fees, Master Classes, tutors, and any other miscellaneous expenses (approx. $15,000). Our next move is to sell the house and hope we can find a place that will reduce our living expenses.  We really need your support to make my dream come true as I prepare for my career.

At Metropolitan, a performing arts school, I study all the aspects required to be a successful "triple threat" in the performing arts (dance, singing, acting). My true passion is first Ballet, and then Modern and Contemporary dance. I have studied classical ballet for 3 years through the Academy and studio. After just 2 years of study, I was selected last year to dance the principal role of Nutcracker in The Nutcracker production at Christmas and I danced the role of the Prince in the spring ballet production of Snow White.  During the school year I attended classes to prepare for and take the Royal Academy of Dance (based on Royal Ballet of London standards) Intermediate Exam.  I participated in an audition for the Estelle Dennis Scholarship at the Peabody Conservatory  for male ballet dancers and received an award ($750) to help further my dance education. I was able to attend the Richmond Ballet 5 week Summer Intensive on a partial scholarship. I also received a scholarship from the Judith A. Steiner Scholarship Fund for the MSA Academy ($1300) for this school year.  My goal is to become a professional ballet dancer. I am striving to reach a level where I can either receive a scholarship to attend a Conservatory for ballet or go directly into a ballet company. I aspire to the highest levels and need the intense level (8 ballet, modern and contemporary classes per week) of instruction I receive at MSA.

In addition, this school has proven to be the best fit for me academically as I have dyslexia and ADD.  I need extra time and assistance to complete my assignments as well as the use of tutors. We attend school from 8:30 - 5:30 with other work after regular hours.  It has worked well for me since I have approximately 20+ hours a week spent in the performing arts area and I was still able to maintain a 3.4 grade point average this year with some very challenging academics.

We would appreciate very much any support you could give us to help pay the $20,000 for tuition we need this school year.  Our most heartfelt thanks.  To help me get the word out, would you please share my link to your Facebook timeline and also share my story with friends, colleagues, family and acquaintances.  Thank you.
