Keep Dennis Rolling

Donation protected
Before suffering a devastating spinal cord injury, my brother, Dennis, never stopped moving. He loved just about any outdoor activity, played several different sports, drove over 30,000 miles a year while enjoyed visiting with family and friends, and for work.

However, on July 19, 2003, after an unexpected fall, he went from being an active 32 year old to a quadriplegic. In the blink of an eye, his life changed forever.

Since that day, Dennis has learned how to accomplish the simplest tasks in new ways and overcome great obstacles. Each day there are new challenges, and some days are harder than others. There have been many highs and lows along the way as paralysis is unpredictable.  Not being able to move or feel is just the tip of the iceberg as far as the effects paralysis has had on his body.

For the past seventeen years, Dennis has tackled every hurdle he’s faced with determination, grace and a degree of stubbornness. He is an inspiration for so many of us. Yet, I know he wouldn’t have made such tremendous progress or maintained his strength and good health without the support of others. Everyone’s encouragement and generosity throughout the years has helped him beyond measure.

Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, we are unable to safely hold the 17th annual golf outing this year. Instead, we have set up this online fundraiser and hope you will consider making a donation to help sustain Dennis for another year. Your donation will help cover his day to day expenses, many of which are not covered by insurance. The money raised will allow him to maintain his wheelchair and van, as well as pay for medications, medical equipment, and defray the cost of a daily in home aide. Our goal is to raise $45,000.

Thank you in advance for your love and support! Be safe and stay healthy.

We hope you have a peaceful summer,
Meg

Note from Dennis:

The year 2020 has been a difficult one for most of us.  The virus has affected us all in many different ways.  Some of us are more vulnerable than others.  Respiratory problems are something I can’t afford to be exposed to in my quadriplegic condition.

I’m sorry to say the 17th annual golf outing and fundraiser in support of myself and others with spinal cord injuries is cancelled this year.  This is tough because it’s a fun day for lots of people I care about, and I get a tremendous boost of encouragement from.  I don’t get around like I used to, so this is always my chance to see many friends and family from all over in person.

The generosity of supporters every year has made it possible to have an aide come and help with my daily needs, buy and maintain crucial equipment, supplies and keep me as healthy as I can be.  There are about 300,000 people living with spinal cord injuries in the U.S., with about 17,000 new cases each year.  I am grateful to be able to contribute to causes important to me: Kessler Foundation for Spinal Cord Research (which I volunteer as a subject every study I qualify for), United Spinal Assoc./Paralyzed Veterans Assoc., and Wounded Warrior Project for those injured protecting us.  These organizations are aimed at improving the quality of life of seriously injured individuals and their families.

This annual fundraiser has been essential in helping take care of my needs for these seventeen years, those on a daily basis as well as the bigger issues along the way.  I can’t imagine how we’d manage without it.  I hope things are safe enough next year to get back to the golf club, and be together again.  Wishing everyone wellness in the coming year.  Immense Thank You for anything you are able to contribute.

                                                                                                Most sincerely, Dennis
