My name is Rasmus, and I’m organizing this fundraiser for my friend and former colleague José Alejandro “Alex” Soberanis Pacheco in Mérida, Yucatán, Mexico.

I met Alex years ago when he worked as my virtual assistant while I was running a real estate business. He was always reliable, kind, and went above and beyond — both in work and in life. I learned quickly that he’s the type of person who quietly helps others, even when it costs him. In Mérida, he’s known for rescuing street animals — he has saved 15 dogs and 47 cats, many of them on the brink of death, and placed them in loving homes.

Today, Alex urgently needs our help.

What happened:
Alex is 29 years old, a husband, and the father of two boys: Marquis (11) and Bayron (2). His wife lives with epilepsy, which makes his role as provider and caregiver even more vital.

A few weeks ago, Alex developed severe abdominal pain. At the public hospital, he was misdiagnosed, sent home without the right treatment, and his condition worsened to the point where he almost died. By the time he finally received proper testing, he was diagnosed with acute edematous pancreatitis and a serious blood infection. His liver is now 50% infected, and doctors are monitoring him for possible surgery.

Where he is now:
Alex is now under care at a private clinic, where he’s finally receiving the correct treatment — but every medication and procedure must be paid for in advance.
To cover his bills so far, Alex has spent everything his family had and even sold his vehicle. This has left the family with no savings, no transportation, and no income while he is ill.

Current treatment:
  • Twice-daily IV antibiotics (Ceftriaxona / Trixona IV)
  • IV fluids and a special medical diet
  • Ongoing blood cultures and lab tests to monitor infection
  • Specialist appointment August 19th to decide on liver surgery

Why this is urgent:
Without continuous treatment, Alex’s infection could progress to septic shock or organ failure. He has already spent ~20,000 MXN out-of-pocket — everything the family had — and is losing ~5,500 MXN/week in income.

What your gift will cover:
Immediate need (7 days) — 23,100 MXN
IV antibiotics & clinic administration: 3,300 MXN/day × 7 days
Lab tests: 1,800 MXN each
Transportation: 300 MXN per visit
Special diet: 400 MXN/day

Next steps:
Doctor consult (Aug 19): 1,600 MXN
Potential liver surgery: 30,000–50,000 MXN
Household essentials: diapers, formula for Bayron, food for the family

Goal
We are setting a target of 93,000 MXN (~US$5,000) to cover immediate treatment, upcoming consults, home essentials, and surgery if needed. Any extra will go toward Alex’s recovery and the animal rescues he supports.

Proof & transparency
I’ve worked with Alex and trust him completely. Alex have additionally shared all diagnostic paperwork, clinic info etc. with me and I can confirm this is indeed very serious. Funds will go directly to Alex’s mother’s bank account, which is shared within the family, to ensure rapid access for paying bills and treatments. Receipts, transfer confirmations, and doctor’s notes will be posted as updates.

From Alex:
“My name is Alex and I’m fighting for my life. I can’t leave my two kids and my wife, who also needs my support, alone in this world. Your help pays for the tests and treatment that keep me alive so I can return to work and return to my family and animals. Anything from your heart is a blessing. Thank you.”
