Keelys Lifesaving Liver Shunt Repair

Meet Keely.
Keely is a 5-month-old Maltese.
She loves running, playing, collecting feathers, chasing her brother, biting chamomile flowers, cuddling, and tug.
Keely is a rescue.
Hobo Haven took her on when she was returned to the puppy mill she came after being unwell.
Had the rescue not taken her on immediately , she would have died. She spent her first night in emerg, and in 24 hours was already at $2,000 in vet bills. A week later she had a $3,000 CT scan to get the full picture of whats going on in her little 1.7 kg body.
So, whats wrong with this perfect little ball of fluff? (Here's the vets list)
The main things:
She has a liver shunt. Her blood bypasses her liver, and it cannot do its job to filter toxins, absorb nutrients, and so much more. She was born this way, and is lucky to be alive.
She has a bladder full of stones due to the shunt, she is very small and malnourished (Gaining weight now that she’s on a proper diet for her condition).
Keely joined us at Black Goat Sanctuary after her CT scan as a medical foster.
She eats a special (and expensive) liver diet every 3 hours with a medication in it that binds with the ammonia her liver cannot filter out. She takes antibiotics twice a day, and is to start ing on anti seizure medication to prep for surgery.
Keely needs surgery. If she is to have any chance at a long, normal(ish) life, she needs it. Some liver shunts can be managed with diet and meds, but a shunt like hers is beyond that option.
The estimate for : liver shunt repair, cystotomy to remove her bladder stones, 3 days in ICU, and post op meds is around $11,000. That’s with her minimum hospital stay.
Yes - its a lot! We know that.
I wish that wasn’t the case at all, but it is.
She is such a joy, she loves everyone and everything. If she happens to find a feather outside - well, its the best day ever for her! She will carry that feather around for hours, showing it off to everyone who comes her way. Her zest for life is contagious, and she deserves a happily ever after. She has been given up on , and discarded TWICE. Never again.
Hobo Haven says “rescue is not just a verb, it is a promise”, and its so true.
Keely has Hobo Haven, Black Goat Sanctuary, and so many more on her side.
Her surgery is booked for July 26 - the soonest appointment the hospital had available.
We have raised $3500 so far towards her food, meds, and initial appointments, but there is a lot more needed - the hospital requires payment up front before the procedure.
Let’s help Hobo Haven and Keely out!
They do so much for so many.
They help the ones that nobody else will, which often carries a large financial burden.
Keely is loving her time at the sanctuary and making lots of friends! Ill be sure to post lots of pics so you can see just how deserving this girl.
Any amount helps greatly!
Thanks so much for supporting and loving Keely as much as we do.
Surgery Estimate total at the bottom.
