Vicki's Fight

Donation protected

Posting on behalf of my friend with her permission, she has written down what her and her family are going through. We are in desperate need of any help at all in the next few weeks, whether financial, trades or materials so we can provide Vicki suitable accommodation to keep her comfortable during the time she has left. Thank you for taking the time to read.

Vicki aged 32 was diagnosed with breast cancer in October 2019, while 16 weeks pregnant. At first the specialist thought it was just a 5cm grade 2 tumour but after going through initial surgery to remove the lump, it was discovered that there was in fact another type of cancer in the breast, and it had spread to nearby lymphoids. With this discovery, Vicki found out that chemotherapy would be necessary and as an expecting mother this news was devastating. The doctors asked her to think very carefully if she wanted to continue with the pregnancy, as this would have meant a break in the chemotherapy to have the baby and the effectiveness of the chemotherapy, with possible effects on the baby. As a mother, Vicki felt that she had no choice as she had felt the baby’s movement and recently found out she was having a girl, she decided to go ahead with the pregnancy.

Vicki had 3 rounds of 3 weekly cycles of chemotherapy but stopped when she was 35 weeks pregnant to gain strength in preparation of the birth of her daughter. In February 2020, Vicki’s fourth child Faith arrived early. Although she had her difficulties when born she is now a very healthy, happy 15-month-old.

Vicki returned to chemotherapy at the end of March and continued with 13 more sessions. Throughout all of this, Vicki suffered excruciating pain in her back, unfortunately bone and CT scans showed that the cancer had spread to 3 of her ribs, her spine, sacrum, and the original tumour in her breast had grown back to almost the size it was when she was first diagnosed. This was the worst possible news Vicki, and her family could have received as the cancer was no longer curable at this point, which meant she would have to live with the disease for the remainder of her life. Vicki then had further surgery, including a single mastectomy and underwent bone strengthening treatment, 25 rounds of radiotherapy and hormone treatment to induce menopause. Vicki will now be undergoing these treatments and taking hormone replacement medication and oral chemotherapy for the rest of her life to try and give her more time with her family.

Previously, Vicki was an early year’s practitioner but had to give it up due to the severe pain and restricted mobility caused by the tumours in her back. She also worked at the youth club in the village where she lives as well as managing and running the local scout group.

Vicki lives with her husband and their 4 children in an upstairs four-in-a-block flat, that cannot be fitted with a stair lift do due the stairwell being too narrow. Occupational therapy has been out to assess her current home, which they have deemed unsuitable for Vicki’s needs and comfort. Unfortunately, the local council have informed the family that there are no 4-bedroom accessible houses in the village where Vicki lives. Their 16-year-old son is in the middle of his higher exams, and they rely heavily on support from their family and friends in the village, as Vicki’s husband works full-time to provide for the family, it is vital they remain in their current village.

Vicki and her husband have managed to get together a deposit to buy a house, but they need your help to renovate it and make it accessible, to allow Vicki a better quality of life to spend with her family.

Please contribute here if you can. Every penny counts for making a new home safe and comfortable for Vicki. Thank you will never cover how grateful we are for any donations that come this way.
