The Covid-19 pandemic in America has destabilized normal lives severely. Just about a month ago we learnt that a possible epidemic is sweeping the world. In a matter of few weeks, many people have died from the corona virus in the United States.
Jobs have been lost, schools and social places are closed down, severely impacting the economic lives of many people. Social distancing especially in time of grief is even more difficult.
Many thousands have died in New York.Among them Five Nepalis have died in New York City. On last Tuesday, the New York City announced that that corona virus victims not claimed within 14 days from the morgue will be buried on potter’s field burial site in Hart Island at least temporarily. As many of you know, the last rites in the Hindu culture is cremation. It is already saddening to lose a loved one, but then to go through financial hardship so as to provide a decent cremation or go through a temporary burial is even more devastating to families.
Friends of Sparsh (FOS) would like to help bereaved family who are in need of burial cost for the last rite services. To do so, we are working with a coordinator who is coordinating with the NY funeral home to provide funding for deceased individual in the amount of max up to $1500.00. At the moment, we are hoping to raise at least $15,000.00 for the burial emergency fund to help needy family.
FOS would like to stand in solidarity in grief of the Hindu families in New York City and be ready to provide funding for the required ritual. FOS is creating a fund page to gather donations for these services. The check for the funds collected will be paid to the funeral home and not to the family of the deceased.
