Waccamaw Tribal Grounds Repairs

Donation protected
The Waccamaw Indian people are the first state recognized Indian Tribe in South Carolina’s History. According to the SC Statistical Abstract, Indian people earn about 27% less than the Caucasian people with the same education level. Additionally, our people live at or below the poverty level at a rate some five times as high.

Our tribal government works hard trying to figure ways to better the plight of our people and we purchased and cleared our land 2005. Today we own it, and the land is a strong tie to our ancestors of the old Dimery Settlement, which was located in the same area.

As the photos will show, the land is low causing severe problems with rainy weather. We have to be able to do pauwaus, school days and other fundraisers to perpetuate the culture and find ways to improve the plight of my people or we are doomed to continue to live at or near the poverty level, forever. The state seems disinterested, so we have to take the lead to get our people out of the situation.

We have the space and the desire to install several RV parking slots which might earn us about $30 each per day of rental. However, we need funding to purchase wiring, piping, sewage hookups and gravel to strengthen  the grounds,  or the slots will not be appealing to people whom visit our area each year.

The RV slot earnings will be used to help fund education for our people and to help retain and perpetuate the  Native Culture in South Carolina.
