For our parents, with love, your children.
I'm Kendelle, my dad Keith Miles’ youngest daughter, and I'm writing on behalf of my siblings and our mom. My dad is very sick with kidney cancer which has now spread to his lungs. My dad can't work at the moment as his chemo treatments are taking a grim toll. My siblings and I are doing the best we can, but we need some serious help. My parents lost their retirement savings when Alberta’s economy plummeted with the oil price three years ago. Medications add up, bills, rent and in general, life is adding up. We are scared and its adding pressure on my dad. I'm going to be honest here. He thinks he's a failure as a parent because of our current circumstance. In truth, I think he's the bravest most hard working man I know. When we were younger and finances were tight, he would sell his jewelry to make sure we kids would have food, and when I asked why he wasn't eating, he'd say he wasn't hungry.
When things improved for us, they donated to charities, helped their families and then, when the oil companies crashed so did my parents investments and retirement plans. In less than 3 years both of our parents were diagnosed with cancer. I feel so uncomfortable asking for charity but we are in dire straits, and every little bit helps. I am sorry to have to ask, but I'd do anything for my mom and dad.
We're not ready to see either of them go. And I'm trying so hard to help.
Even if you have just read this, thank you, that alone means a lot. I hope who ever reads this has an amazing day :) Xoxo Kendelle Thornton, Tina Miles, Mike Miles, Ashley thornton, Taylor and Karli Nelson and Mac and silla Nielson
