Kayla's Service Dog Journey

Donation protected
As a vibrant 20 year old, Kayla is trying to be as independent as possible in her journey through adulthood.  People can be rude to disabled adults and tasks are more difficult as the expectations of adulthood linger in her path.

Kayla suffered from a tramatic birth with a lack of oxygen and her heart rate dropped to the 30's twice leaving her with Organic Brain Damage.  While she was growing up, her family modified her world to be feesible for maximum development with the presence of Cognitive Developmental Delays.

As a 6th grader, her family was told by the public school system she would never read, write, or even sign her own name.  Today, she signs her name, manages her own bills, and buys groceries.  Even though reading is still difficult, she is an avid audiobook listener.  She loves a good story and her favorites are Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens, Little Women, and if you ask her, she is an expert on the Harry Potter series.   Recently, Kayla has wanted to develop more and achieve as much independence as possible.  This leaves her and her family asking professionals what is the safest route to promote her into adulthood.  Doctors and Therapist both have suggested a Service Dog.  So our journey begins...

Kayla has recently been diagnosed with a muscle deficiency in her eyes leaving her with low vision and near legally blind which causes her the inability to read and limits her vision which causes difficulty in simple activities of daily living like crossing a street.

With Kayla's Cognitive impairment she struggles with daily activities such as cooking because she has short term memory  difficulty; therefore, she may leave burners on without remembering to turn them off.  Lastly, she recently was diagnosised with signs of Autism.  Kayla finds it extremely difficult in large crowds and often is ovewhelmed leading to social anxiety when situations changes or are unexpected.

Kayla grew up with a rescue sheltie as her sidekick.  Two years ago, Katy dog passed away and since Kayla still deals with grief from multiple losses over a short time - she still misses her 4-legged friend.

The emotional struggles and increased desire for independence tells us the time is now and the necessity is present for her to have a Service dog.  We are asking everyone to pray for her, donate to her journey, and watch her exceed all expectations.  Bless you for your partnership.
