Kay Marshall - F1 Powerboat driver
Kay Marshall, much loved grandmother of my two girls, is currently strapped to a hospital bed in Thailand awaiting surgery on her fractured T8 disk. She needs to have 8 screws drilled into a her spine later this week after her lungs and sinuses clear of the river water that could cause infection.
How did she get here? For those who know her, you wont have to think too long. For those who don't this is her story.
Kay Marshall is a Formula One Powerboat driver and while all of her male counterparts from the 80s and 90s when we raced the world series have long since hung up their race boots and helmets, she has continued - adrenalin in her viens.
She was racing in the Singha Formula One Powerboat race in Thailand on 26 November, leading the race, two laps ahead with just half a lap to go and her steering broke. The crash was horendous and the very quick and wonderful rescue divers pulled her from the boat unconscious. We are lucky she is alive!
She has at least two weeks in Samitivej Hospital in front of her - a great hospital based on its reviews, but not cheap. Several surgeons looking after her and then a flight home that will require her to be laid flat.
Mum and dad (her chief mechanic) have self funded the vast majority of their racing career. They love it. But you cant get travel insurance as an F1 Powerboat driver - what insurance company would take that risk.
So my dad is by my mum's hospital bed, waiting for the next doctor visit and the surgery. I would like to try and raise some money to help take the worry of the cost of the medical bills and return trip to Australia off his mind.
Please help.
