Countless people have been touched by the smile, humor, and sheer kindness that Katie Bayer displays on a daily basis. She is a sister, daughter, colleague, co-worker, and friend--loved endlessly by all those with whom she interacts.
This past Valentine's Day, Katie was diagnosed with stage 4 invasive ductal carcinoma---a severe, advanced form of breast cancer that tends to inflict women much older than 24. Unfortunately, the cancer has invaded other parts of her body, spreading to her bones, lungs, and liver. As one can imagine, the diagnosis was unexpected and heart-wrenching for all those who treasure and love her. Still, Katie shows her trademark strength and resilience by keeping one of the most optimistic and hopeful demeanors I have ever witnessed in the face of such devasating news. She is a true warrior.
Katie is currently undergoing radiation to relieve pain in her jaw, back, and legs from the cancer metastasis. After her second week of this treatment, she will undergo chemotherapy indefinitely. Obviously, hospital bills will continue to accrue, and the Bayer family will continue to support Katie financially in everyday ways (i.e. food, transportation, pain management) as she goes through treatment and recovery while off of work. It is difficult enough to endure the physical, mental, emotional, and psychological trauma that comes with a cancer diagnosis, and we wish to prevent Katie from also experiencing this heavy financial burden.
