So this is hard for us, but we need some help. This will probably be a shock to a lot of you, but we tried to keep this private as long as possible. So here it is…


Katie and I have been married for a little over 3 years now. For the past 2 years we have been trying to conceive. Unfortunately things do not always go as planned. After a few months of not being successful on our own Katie decided to see a gynecologist for any possible issues. They did several tests and sent us to a Reproductive Endocrinologist. This is where we found out Katie has PCOS.


For those of you who do not know PCOS is polycystic ovarian syndrome. Basically causing her ovaries to produce way more follicles than a normal woman. Having this causes irregular cycles and not enough hormones for all the follicles. Hence the problem conceiving.


So we seeked out treatment at NKC hospital. To find out that insurance does not cover any infertility treatments due to it not being medically necessary, but that did not stop us!


We started with the simple oral medications. We did at least 5 cycles of oral medication with little success of growing healthy follicles. We did both timed intercourse and IUI or insemination. This was the cheapest option, but did not give us a high chance of conceiving. 5 cycles may not seem like a lot, but it takes up at least 5 months of your life. Katie went in for several ultrasounds and blood tests a week to monitor follicle growth. They seemed successful until the dreaded pregnancy test, which was always negative.


We got frustrated with that so we took a small break for a couple months. Then we decided it was time for a second opinion. To KU we go.


At KU we met Dr. Lydic. The most patient, informative, and understanding doctor we have ever had. We spent over an hour discussing treatments at our first visit. He decided that injectables would be a good next step for us. However injections are way more expensive, especially with insurance not paying anything, but it was a higher chance of conceiving so we went for it.


We have now completed 4 more cycles with injectable medications, 1 of which we had to cancel due to excessive follicle growth. Thank you to the PCOS for too many follicles. The injectable medication cost was $350-$1050 per pen. Some cycles we had to get more than 1 pen just to make it through the cycle. On top of that Katie had to do more ultrasounds and blood work because the injectable medication is much more volatile. At KU we had to pay for the IUI (insemination) up front, another $600. Since this is determined on how the cycle goes we only had 2-3 days notice to come up with the money. Again none of this being successful.


So now we turn to family, friends, and anyone willing to help. We want, more than anything in the world, to have a child of our own. We have exhausted all of our personal resources trying to make this happen: drained our savings, maxed out credit cards, and even borrowed money from a complete stranger. We need your help in making our next step towards our goal. We are going to do IVF, In Vitro fertilization. This is even more expensive than what we have been doing, but Dr. Lydic believes that it is our best option going forward. The retrieval of eggs, fertilization of eggs, and placement of embryo process is $11,000 on its own. This does not include all the medications and testing during the whole process, which is why our goal is $15,000.
