Step 1 for Kathy -a biopsy that resulted in damage affecting the use of her arm.
Step 2 -brain surgery, where she remained conscious for a high risk and most invasive surgery to remove the tumour. The surgery was moderately helpful in removing a portion of the tumour. Tests confirmed that it to be a Stage 4 tumour, highly aggressive and not curable.
Step 3 - Currently Kathy is in rehab at Juravinski Hospital where she is working to regain the mobility lost prior to her surgery. A barrage of radiation and chemotherapy treatments to combat her cancer have already begun. Rehab is meant to last for three weeks. At that point, she will be discharged to continue her treatments as an outpatient.
Of immediate concern are the significant home modifications required for her return. Among those adaptations are a wheelchair lift to enter the home, a fully accessible, enlarged bathroom, the widening of doorways and addition of handrails, and the modification of the porch floor so that a ramp is not necessary. The estimate for the renovation is $25,000. Like most of us, there is no ready source for such a significant amount of money, so the work required on her home clearly weighs heavily on Kathy and the entire family.
Kathy’s Facebook posts make us laugh and we marvel that her strength can find ‘funny’ when there’s not much ‘funny’ to be found (“so this is not the vacation I envisioned for myself”). Through this whole experience, Kathy has displayed remarkable courage, humour and grace. But in times like this, attitude is simply not enough. I would like to ask all of the people who love, admire and respect Kathy when times were good, but more so now, when times are so difficult, to extend a helping hand in the form of financial support. I know that many of you will be happy to do so. But I would also ask that you share Kathy’s story with your friends and family and ask for their support for this woman who has demonstrated every day, how to evolve into an everyday hero.
Any amount is appreciated and donations can be anonymous if you wish.
