Katie's Comeback

Katie’s Comeback
On November 25 my sister, Kathy Akerson had a stroke. Our grandfather, Ben Swiggum had the same type of stroke, also at a young age.

The event left her without the use of her right side and speech aphasia. The doctors at St. Mary’s Hospital discovered the cause to be a 95% occlusion of her left carotid artery.

Tuesday November 28 she had a carotid endarterectomy to clean the artery. Katie the warrior, with a new badass scar was discharged from the hospital three days later.

While Kathy was in the hospital she worked with speech therapists, physical therapists and occupational therapists daily and made great progress. She will begin outpatient therapy in January and Mayo Clinic doctors expect her to make a full recovery.

Katie has begun rehabbing at the exclusive Casa Del Shipman in Byron, Minnesota with her mom Carol (also, one tough cookie)

Kathy and Brad are overwhelmed and appreciate all of your prayers and encouragement. I was grateful when Brad agreed to let us start this page to help them with medical expenses and lost wages.

Katie’s Comeback page is for our beautiful & courageous sister and her family. She is literally always there for everyone who needs her. Please help us ease this burden for her so that she can focus on her recovery.
